Gastroenterologist
A gastroenterologist is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and related organs. This includes the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. Gastroenterologists play a crucial role in managing conditions such as acid reflux, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, hepatitis, and gastrointestinal cancers.
These specialists are skilled in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures like endoscopy, colonoscopy, and ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography). These minimally invasive procedures allow them to examine the GI tract, detect abnormalities, and perform interventions such as polyp removal or stent placement.
Becoming a gastroenterologist requires extensive training, including medical school, a residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in gastroenterology. Many also receive advanced training in subspecialties like hepatology or interventional endoscopy.
Gastroenterologists emphasize preventive care, such as screening for colon cancer and managing risk factors for liver diseases.
